We're big believers in the power of open-source collaboration here at Pharos. Our software product, Pharos AMS directly uses (our best estimate) 22 different open-source projects -- and that's not even taking into account our production environment and development tools.
Open-source software is so ubiquitous these days that it's difficult to determine how many different projects are being indirectly used. The ecosystem is rich and diverse, and there's frequent exchanges of skills, labor and deep thought between projects. If it wasn't for this culture of free software (as in beer and as in freedom), Carl and I would not have been able to start Pharos, period.
Being a good citizen of the community doesn't begin and end with simply consuming everyone else's work -- it requires giving something back. So we, the partners of Pharos, have decided to strategically release code into the wild under open-source licenses. It won't be all of our software, but it will be the tools and modules that we think might be widely-applicable and -useful.
Not coincidentally, this morning we published our first open-source project, 'git-rake', which is a toolkit for managing a large number of source code repositories. If you're interested, take a look at the announcement blog post and the project site.
In the future, we'll continue to be good open-source citizens by:
